Secret Service investigates high-school band
Last Updated Wed, 17 Nov 2004 17:48:37 EST

BOULDER, COLO. - The Secret Service investigated a band made up of high-school students last week after reports of death threats against U.S. President George W. Bush.

The group, from Boulder High, is known as Coalition of the Willing.

It was formerly called the Taliband, a reference to the toppled regime in Afghanistan.

Agents for the Secret Service carried out an investigation after they received reports that the band had changed the lyrics of the 1963 Bob Dylan song Masters of War to include a threat against Bush.

One line in the song, which is an attack on arms dealers, goes "And I hope that you die/And your death\'ll come soon."

The words were reportedly changed to "George Bush, I hope you die soon."

The band was scheduled to play at a talent show on Nov. 13. Some students who attended a rehearsal for the show claimed that they heard the new lyrics, and someone contacted the Secret Service.

Agents then questioned the school\'s principal, Ron Cabrera, who disputed the story.

"I know that people have made accusations and allegations about people and kids that are unfounded and untrue," Cabrera told the Associated Press the day before the show.

"I talked to many people who were [at the practice], including teachers, students and other faculty and no one altered the lyrics or expressed any ill will or any reference to President Bush or anyone dying."

The Secret Service did not speak to the band\'s members, who range in age from 13 to 17.

The agency did, however, talk to a teacher who supervised an anti-Bush protest at the same school the previous week.

The talent show went ahead without incident. It was sold out.

be warned.  dont threaten the president by name.  but with a song like this, names are irrelevant.  you know who you are.  hehe.  come on sing along with me-

Come you masters of war
You that build all the guns
You that build the death planes
You that build the big bombs
You that hide behind walls
You that hide behind desks
I just want you to know
I can see through your masks

You that never done nothin\'
But build to destroy
You play with my world
Like it\'s your little toy
You put a gun in my hand
And you hide from my eyes
And you turn and run farther
When the fast bullets fly

Like Judas of old
You lie and deceive
A world war can be won
You want me to believe
But I see through your eyes
And I see through your brain
Like I see through the water
That runs down my drain

You fasten the triggers
For the others to fire
Then you set back and watch
When the death count gets higher
You hide in your mansion
As young people\'s blood
Flows out of their bodies
And is buried in the mud

You\'ve thrown the worst fear
That can ever be hurled
Fear to bring children
Into the world
For threatening my baby
Unborn and unnamed
You ain\'t worth the blood
That runs in your veins

How much do I know
To talk out of turn
You might say that I\'m young
You might say I\'m unlearned
But there\'s one thing I know
Though I\'m younger than you
Even Jesus would never
Forgive what you do

Let me ask you one question
Is your money that good
Will it buy you forgiveness
Do you think that it could
I think you will find
When your death takes its toll
All the money you made
Will never buy back your soul

And I hope that you die
And your death\'ll come soon
I will follow your casket
In the pale afternoon
And I\'ll watch while you\'re lowered
Down to your deathbed
And I\'ll stand o\'er your grave
\'Til I\'m sure that you\'re dead

please dont misunderstand me. dont worry.  im only talking about naming names when you wish someone would die and die soon.  and especially if you name the president of the united states.  what you show here does not rise to that level of threat.  imo but hey im not from the fbi.  dont believe anything i say

what i really want to know is if you sung along
the map is not the territory

gkg

of course i did - with gusto, baby.

i actually got into a snaffu over a show i wanted to curate - the people who run the space wanted me to sensor my work and the work of other artists, but sure we weren\'t mentioning or threatening the president or anyone in the administration.  i can\'t do that.  will not do that.  it\'s insane to ask artists to sensor themselves let alone others - that\'s what ART is about, freedom of expression!  what a world.

did you read the piece on the reporter in Rhode Island they want to lock up because he refuses to reveal his source.  i\'m not talking about the Plume case, this is a whole other case and it\'s gone beyond threatening reporters with jail, etc. = they have actually sentenced this guy.

where the f\'ck is defense of the FIRST AMENDMENT?!

they\'re so busy making sure people like me can\'t marry the person we\'ve loved, lived and raised kids with for decades, that they\'ve managed to distract people from the fact that we have a whole passle of rights actually under threat of cancellation.
Peace.

sounds like it felt good to sing it
sing it outside at midnight under the dark moon to get the full effect
ditch that gallery, there are plenty more whose freedom of expression may better match your definition
because only government is bound by the 1st amendment

Quotei\'m printing out the words to try your suggestion - my neighbors may not be thrilled, but they\'ve heard loud noises in the middle of the night since we moved in.

ah - the current government is trying hard to get out of the first amendment - that\'s my beef.

long as we\'re trading Dylan:
but i wasnt trading dylan.  maybe try a different kind of loud just for fun.  and headsup the full effect only snaps in when you can do it from memory.  have fun while you can

its gonna be a long 4 years alright

if my fellow students turned me into the fbi for singing a song, id write a song about it and then sing it real loud at the next soldout talent show
