I read this in our newspaper last week and found the article online to share with you all.

Bob Marley is one if the most influencial humanitarians/musicians/artists of our time. His music helped shaped who I am today.

anyone into a little discussion about it?

if people are going to sell it w/o permission then it is probably best that it be managed

his family at least can contribute to humanitarian causes if they choose, rather than people profiting and lining their pockets w/o the right to do so...

Bob would maybe have hoped people could just be cool huh?
Truth:  it's OK if they don't understand.  if you follow it, stay true to it, and respect it, you could be in store for the greatest journey you could ever imagine.

I think that was his hopes when he was alive, but he did get ripped by Lee Scratch Perry on some of his earliest recordings so I know the family has dealt with the issue since the get go.

It does seem a bit hypocritical knowing of Bob\'s philosophy but the world and music industry has changed alot since then. With estimated pirate sales of over 600 million and official sales about 1% of that there is no way they can take it all on so I think it is more about preserving and controlling the image than making money, but no doubt getting a bigger piece of that pie is part of this and deservedly so. I have also heard it called the "bastardization of character" and it is important to keep the original message clear without letting other people add their ideas to the Marley image to make money rather than spread the good word. I still get upset when people think I Shot the Sheriff was written by Eric Clapton.*

I just hope in 10-20 years when some kid sees Bob Marley snowboards or shoes he knows Bob was a musician and not an extreme sports athelete.

*EDIT - I want to clarify that I don\'t think Eric ripped Bob, in interviews he has repeatedly said that respects Bob at the highest level and wanted to help spread his message. I just get upset at ignorant people who don\'t know Bob wrote that song. I also get upset at the same people who think Stevie Ray Vaughan wrote Little Wing. I guess I have some issues,, :P

I guess I\'d say that the best preservation of Bob Marley is his music, not his image.  It was probably the music that started all the image stuff anyway.

With all due respect, I think some of those folks have been smokin\' too much weed.

Totally, and from other things I have read it is the all the fake and bootleg cds that make up a majority of the pirated items. Part of the problem is turning all of our icons into a Brand - we\'ve seen it with John Lennon, Elvis, Grateful Dead. Their music has transponded (is that a word?) beyond just feelgood sound and lyrics to thier image representing core values and beliefs that the music envokes in us. If that image is being abused it is the right of the estate to controll it as best they can. But that is just my opinion.

I have seen so much Bob Marley stuff it\'s unbelievable, and I didn\'t actually know that none of the money earned from it isn\'t going to the family estate.

I think it\'s a wise decision, they\'ll definitely profit A LOT from this.
