Please join us for a Dramatic Reading of "Voices in Wartime." This literary performance is a poetry slam presented in the idea of a play - a night filled with lights, images, sound, music and the spoken word. "Players" (readers) include: Guerin Barry (formerly Tito of Sha-Na-Na), Bob Foster, Lee Rossi, Laurel Ann Bogen, Suzanne Lummis, Antonieta Villamil, Sherman Pearl, Andrew Himes, Akima Hus, David Krieger, Joe Montoya, Juan Nevarez, Robert Carroll, Muna Coobtee, Kriss Perras, more talent to come as casting continues. . .

The proceeds from this event will go to "An Opening of the Heart Education Project" where students are taught to find alternate solutions to conflict other than violence.
 
The dramatic reading sharply etches the experience of war through powerful images and the words of poets - unknown and world-famous. Soldiers, journalists, historians and experts on combat add diverse perspectives on war's effects on soldiers, civilians and society. This is a multi-cultural event where poets from around the world share their views and experiences of war that extend beyond national borders and into the depth of the human soul.

The night will bring to life how poetry and war have been intertwined since the beginning of recorded history --from ancient Babylonia and the fields of troy--to the huge conflicts of the 20th century and the current war in Iraq. The stirring words of poets of the past - Homer, Wilfred Owen, Emily Dickinson, Langston Hughes, Walt Whitman and Shoda Shinoe from Hiroshima are combined with more recent voices: a Vietnam vet and poets in war-torn Baghdad. The poetry moves us to the emotion of war explained to us by soldiers, journalists and a doctor who have experienced the effects of combat firsthand. The poetry illuminates the reality of war\'s devastation on society.

Tune in to Blase Bonpane\'s World Focus Show on KPFK 90.7FM (Democracy Now!)  this Sunday January 22 at 10:00am (PST) where the dramatic reading of Voices in Wartime Director, Kriss Perras, and Executive Producer, Andrew Himes will be interviewed on poetry, how we should not study wars to glorify them, how it is so hard to deal with the fact that both sides are never the same in a war - one side is usually the aggressor and this makes negotiations so difficult and is the challenge in conflict resolution.
