Title: Question for Travis (Thanatopsis)
Post by: kevindanielcahill on December 13, 2010, 04:16:00 pm
Hey Travis, just a quick few questions...
On the album Axiology, do you have a favroute track in particular? If so why?
Also my favroute song on that album is "New Year" The piano on there is just....speachless its amazing, the whole track has a good vibe/meaning to it, I wondered
if there are any tracks on this album or any of the Thanatopsis records that have a meaning behind them, or was it basically just writing and jamming out a tune?

Any feedback would be great.

p.s I know you included the making of the Thanatopsis records on the website... I was looking for a more "emotional?"meaning to the process rather than from a technical stand point.
Cheers...

hey, i just wanted to say that the album dragons of eden is brilliant, and that the brain and the chariot is hands down one of the best instrumental tracks that i have heard in a while, i am a senior in high school and am going to audio engineering school, i wanted to know if there was any sheet music/tab or any form of written material for that song because i would love to be able to cover it with my band.

On Axiology, Axiology is my favorite track.  There are two kinds of processes that went into the making of those records. Snippets of guitar riffs and keyboards were strung together to construct tracks and then overdubs added, a lot like painting, throwing colors on and moving them around till it looks like something. The other type is where I would bring a song structure in and have the others play to that.
Axiology is the later. It was a song I intended to use elsewhere but decided to use it for Thanatopsis.

There is no meaning to the tracks beyond the music. I usually come up with titles just before pressing the record and let the completed music suggest possible themes as most of the Thanatopsis records do.

It\'s interesting to note that this year I have seen a real increase in interest in these records. I nice to see them getting discovered all of a sudden. I put a lot of myself into those records and was afraid they would fade into obscurity. It\'s heartening to see them being discovered or rediscovered. This coming year will be the 10th anniversary of the first CD. I can\'t say there will be any future for Thanatopsis but if interest increases it might be fun to do something special for the anniversary.

It\'ll never happen Travis.  Quality music like this is appreciated for lifetimes.

Travis, all the stuff you put out is nothing short of amazing.. You can certainly tell that amounts of time and effort really went into these records. And I feel like they\'ve made an impact on me and well pretty much my life. I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life.. I certainly had options but couldnt decide.. I knew music was a big part of me.. So I just kept at it for a while. Slowly I got into the whole music thing.. And really have to thank travis, buckethead, brain, and ramy.these thanatopsis tracks really got me going and just that alone made me decide what I want to do with my life and that is to become a professional musician.. I know this is all really random but I mean thanatopsis is on the top of my list as the best p project.. And it\'s inspired me to do something similar.. I would love to see a thanatopsis show, but anything at this point is just more motivation to me and others that are equally inspired. Really Travis, to me, this is music.. I love to listen to it.. And if it inspires me to do the same, then that says something. I hope you produce more, with or without brian! And I will look forward to every single second of it!!! Thank you Travis I honestly can\'t thank you enough!

Well I can say that I only heard those records earlier on this year. I bought all three of them in a oner. It was one of the best decisions iv ever made, Axiology is my favroute Thanatopsis record, there is a certain feel and atmosphere about that record. If you decide to make another Thanatopsis record you should do it for yourself and then for the fans. Id buy it for sure.
Thanks for getting back to me, really appreciate it.

Anniversary idea:

Make a new thanatopisis album. Record video footage of the "making of" and sell a DVD with the music and footage. And have it in a case like "best regards" with signatures on the front. I\'ll be first to buy! And I\'m  sure it would encompass many buckethead fans aswell. Not just "thanatopsis fanatics" like me.

I would buy that.  Then my mom would say, "stop buying stuff."  Then I\'d say, "Tell these guys to stop making so much incredible stuff ;D"

For all of us bots that are looking for a Thanatopsis and or Travis/Buckethead tour. I think it could also very easily be like a residency at a club in California, they could set up, play for a few nights, and video the whole thing.
That way we as greedy lil bots get what we want, live Travis/Bucket and Travis doesn\'t need to leave his business behind.

Ah, yes, that is my dream; feel free to latch on  8)

^ This would indeed be cool, a little private thanatopsis gig where they jam out a few in California, with a few tapers there, i\'m down!

Travis, have you ever given this subject a thought?
