Title: BH contest discussion thread.
Post by: Bucketdog on November 14, 2010, 10:42:17 pm
If you have to post comments, suggestions or whatever else you want related to the contest. Please do it here and leave the other thread for our contestants and voters!  ;D

Thank you!

1 drum track, 1 guitar track right? Just making sure I remember that right...

Yeah I was just checkin that out too.. What exactly are the rules to this? I\'m not sure if they are spread out thru the other thread or not. perhaps they could be posted before the voting, or in the voting thread too.

it doesn\'t say anywhere specific, but i think bucketdog said that in the middle of the contest thread, somewhere. that there couldn\'t be both rythm and lead guitar, only lead and percussion..

^^^ you are correct stuntcyote. Making it only guitar and percussion makes it\'s tougher on the contestants. And basicly forces you to cover more sound space with your guitar. I think it\'s good for people to do for themselves and makes it more challenging!!!

I guess I glossed over, but also would like some clarification on accompaniment...

Does that mean only one single guitar track? and either a percussion track or a metronome?

OR....

Multiple guitar tracks allowed but the only OTHER instrument allowed is percussion...

is a bass guitar a guitar? if there are multiple guitar tracks can one be a bass?

and percussion is not required but is allowed right?

sorry not trying to be an anal-retentive dick here.. (does that have a hyphen?) Just trying to figure out the rules.

I will review the videos after work. If there indeed 2 guitars...it will be discounted from the contest unless he changes it accordingly to the contest guidelines.

" Only accompaniment**<--singular not plural** may be percussion based instruments or a metronome."

Ok, so.... This doesn\'t expalain it? Also if you were in tune with the original thread posted regarding this contest. You would have already known it was gonna be like this. My apologies if I wasn\'t clear.

The song can only consist of - one stringed instrument and any form of percussion. Let it be a drummer, cow bell or metronome...it doesn\'t matter. Hope this helps.

And yes - I love using the hyphen incorrectly. That\'s how I roll, Foo...

Hello!

When I entered this contest, I did not see anywhere that only 1 single guitar track was accepted. This is the original post by "bucketdog" reguarding the rules :

Contestants rules:
Song - buckethead style under 3 mins and 30 seconds and no shorter than 2 minutes and 30 seconds. Only accompaniment may be percussion based instruments or a metronome. Videos need to be posted by Monday the 15th 11:59pm eastern standard time.

This says nothing about only 1 guitar track allowed. If this has been posted later I have not read it as I dont have the time to check out the forum every day.

If you would like to disqualify me, then fine.

Let\'s enjoy your beautiful and melodious tribute to your grandfather and think about this a little later.  The Bucket\'s got "I Love My Parents," and your song and visuals have that same wonderful appreciative glow that does us all good, regardless of contests.

He still did not say a single guitar track.. he said "one stringed instrument"... and any form of percussion.

Personally I interpret that as.. if you chose guitar you must stick with it.. if you chose bass you must stick with it... if you chose cello.. you must only include cello and percussion

im not a contestant.. but was interested in judging ... yes im judging you alllll......so i was curious what the rules were.. it appears there is some confusion

Alien_Ken - ok don\'t worry about it. I\'ll make an exception, because I feel partly at-fault... If you win you\'ll get a $75.00 spending spree and there will be a second place spot for $35.00. Because of the backing track. Otherwise anyone else that wins gets the full amount of $110.00. Are you and is everyone cool with that?

Wow a lot of really good submissions so far!

Quick question to avoid problems ...in a earlier post i read that it is OK to have some voice over stuff(like Maximum bob type stuff) is this correct? my song has a little at the beginning and before i post it ..i kinda need to know :)

dont let him keep that video with rhythm guitar and lead guitar. he\'s either going to have to re-do it by today or be disqualified. because it wouldnt be fair if you let him keep it because i reeeeeeeeally wanted to solo, i asked specially if two guitars were ok and bucketdog said no.
Title: Re: BH contest discussion thread.
Post by: DisembodiedLoaf on November 15, 2010, 11:54:36 pm
It was very clear to me that there may only be one insrument besides drums.

Giving yourself the challenge of writing a one instrument song is very beneficial. I forced myself to do so a few months ago. What\'s great about it is that theyre songs you can perform live with no band or setup.

@beliveinthebucket

Sorry man, I already told him it was cool. But now that you say it... I would prefer if he did re-record a different version. Realisticly it\'s not fair to our other competitors...

Ken - if you could re-do your great tune. I\'d allow you till tomorrow mid-day  to finish it. Don\'t delete your entry, just modify it and post another link. I know I\'m contradicting the hell out of myself by asking you this. But, beliveinthebucket is 100% correct. If you can\'t repost a new video by then, I\'ll buy you any single cd of your choice off of here for all the trouble(and a because you wrote a great tune). Just pm me the cd name and your home address and that\'s it. I\'ll leave it up to you. Damn, I feel like an ass now.

Just a little trivia. I imported my song into cubase yesterday and I don\'t know why, but it was all slow and low pitched. It sounded really cool. I then reversed it and here is the result: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PsiXH4mud8o&feature=youtube_gdata_player

26 people at tk listened to it, but none of them commented and one even thumbs-downed it. :\'(

Anyone notice that if you go to one of these videos on YouTube, the others are related? Pretty cool. I mean, we didn\'t all have to use similar tags and such.

Mines the only one with no comments. Conspiracy?!

if you still havent figured out how to upload your song. click export as mp3 or export to itunes or save on disk or something like that.

then (i assume you have imove since you have garageband) just make an imove project and drag it in there, save it and upload!

Hello!

Its morning here in Norway, so I just read all of your postings. I`m sorry if I screwed up and did not read the entire thread of contest rules.

If it is unfair to the others, it`s okay to disqualify me. I did not do this for the money, but for the fun if it and to honour my grandfather.

I have gotten many great comments and that means more to me than any money in the world  :)

The next time I will be sure to get the rules right.....

Thanks  ;)

In my opinion, you shouldn\'t have to read through an entire thread to understand the rules. They should be explicitly stated in the opening post. If changes are made within the thread, the OP should be adjusted to show the changes.

I don\'t blame alien_ken for not reading the whole thread.

Sounds like you got worked out though....

The A-Ken issue was covered in an equitable manner.  Believe-Bucket withdrew his objection, while A-Ken was gracious about being dropped out if that\'s what it took to be fair.  B-dog came up with a % idea that nobody is currently objecting to.  Jowaxe has made a few really good points.  We\'ll need to figure out more detailed rules for the next event and put them all in the same place.
From my personal view, it has been a lot of fun to see who the contestants themselves vote for.  Besides, the contestants are a big part of our bot-base and group of friends.  I think they should vote, not for themselves, this time, and we\'ll make a rule for the next time.

For me, this was about having fun. No objections here.

It\'d be fun to have another competition with as many channels as you want. It\'d be cool to have a torrent with all of the songs for people to download in a lossless format as well! Then I could burn off a CD with them to listen to at work or whatever :D I don\'t know about the rest of you, but my original track went from around 52MB down to 4.8MB or something.

why limited to 5 contestants?  i think the more the better, there really shouldn\'t be a limit. and next time a list of rules should be spelled out in the original post so people aren\'t confused, and there aren\'t any weird stipulations.

It would be really fun with a big contest with a big prize and lots of contestants. But it will be cool to see a contest with just 5 players. There\'s more pressure on them, and it may be a higher standard. Some really nice songs could be born from that.

So I appear to have done really bad. Is it because my song isn\'t enough like Buckethead? Is it because my song was unique or because people don\'t know what a mandolin is? Maybe I should of used a guitar song - played for 6.5 years instead of 5 months. I originally wrote a guitar song for this, but it didn\'t much sound like Bucket.

I liked your song im personally just more into Bucketheads metal stuff like The Deli creeps ... i never really got into the whole "love song thing" unless its a spoof on it :) plus its hard to beat backing tracks and a song about a guys grandfather.

For the record you were my second choice because your song was a complete song ,not some random noodling

QuoteSo I appear to have done really bad. Is it because my song isn\'t enough like Buckethead? Is it because my song was unique or because people don\'t know what a mandolin is? Maybe I should of used a guitar song - played for 6.5 years instead of 5 months. I originally wrote a guitar song for this, but it didn\'t much sound like Bucket.
dont feel bad not to many people on this forum like the mandolin but i LOVED your song!!

Well, I think the metal type songs are more popular among Buckethead fans, so I shouldve done one of those with drums.

No way, always play what you like. Sometimes people have bad taste in music...go onto itunes right now and look at the top 10 songs ..i promise you\'ll be in for a good laugh :)

Yes, I know most people have bad taste in music, but Buckethead fans are way smarter.

Actually, right now Stuntcoyote and myself are the only ones with votes for a metal song (5 and 2 votes respectively). It\'s 30% for metal and 70% for lighter, slower music.

I liked your song. It was definitely was influenced by Buckethead and it was impressive that you could play it on a mandolin.

Disembodiedloaf should have had the most votes. Here\'s a guy that said,"hey, hey screw your stupid guitar, I\'m gonna tear it up on the mandolin!". My song was a quick 45min slap it togeather and record it! And I didn\'t get a single vote. I got some awesome messages and comments on YouTube and I had fun writing it for those 45mins!

So don\'t feel bad disembodiedloaf, this was about the joy of personalizing a song relative to big-b\'s style and the oppertunity to show your fellow bots what ya can do. Realisticly we are all winners as long as you had fun. Because that\'s what this competition was all about.

Neat contest. More diverse than I thought it would be, too. It was a tough decision to vote for just one.

^^^ I was hoping you were gonna post, Box. I thought for sure you\'d do a metal buckethead type song. I just prefer the heavier stuff and wanted to hear more metal buckethead entries. All were great though.

I liked your song im personally just more into Bucketheads metal stuff like The Deli creeps ... i never really got into the whole "love song thing" unless its a spoof on it :) plus its hard to beat backing tracks and a song about a guys grandfather.

Forgot to mention, did you listen to the whole thing? Not quite a love song. Lol
