Title: My Creative Outlet
Post by: ella_mental on May 20, 2008, 10:43:54 pm
I haven\'t seen much in the way of poetry posted here.  I feel compelled to share.  This is a poem I wrote after my grandmother died.  She is the last part.  The first part is about wasted life.

Grim Reaper

There is darkness
Before falling
When the reaper mows what was sewn

A bed of death and rotted orchards
The face of the unknown
Black hood hung over bad omen
To hide evil that is creeping

The jagged sickle swung
And blood is spilled
The gleaming chill an icy blade
To beauty that was shunned

There is darkness
Before rising
When the reaper eats what was grown

A flower bed and ripened orchards
The face of compassion
Black hood hung over soft shadow
To hide eyes that are weeping

The jagged sickle swung
And life is poured
The glowing core a radiant light
To beauty that endured

I looked around...I thought I had posted this poem somewhere yet i didn\'t find it...so here goes my poem...one I am very fond of...

Oppossum Alone

Late dark night
No stars in sight
Speeding along...
Something in sight

Blindly starring
at the headlights
Stitting very still...
Oppossum alone
Near fresh road kill
A loved one ....guaranteed
Alone so lost...and hopeless

My heart ached
thank god I missed
so painful another did not
I could not help but cry then,
when I think of the oppossum
alone
i do...still

BIG HUGZ!  ;D

Thank you ZQ.

I\'m not much of a haikuer.

I felt your poem as well.  Actually, that exact scenario happened to me within the past month.  I swerved, endangering human life.  In my ideal world animals would have a road crossing instinct.

Alone by Edgar Allan Poe

From childhood\'s hour I have not been
As others were---I have not seen
As others saw---I could not bring
My passions from a common spring.
From the same source I have not taken
My sorrow; I could not awaken
My heart to joy at the same tone;
And all I lov\'d, I loved alone.
Then---in my childhood---in the dawn
Of a most stormy life---was drawn
From ev\'ry depth of good and ill
The mystery which binds me still:
From the torrent, or the fountain,
From the red cliff of the mountain,
From the sun that \'round me roll\'d
In its autumn tint of gold---
From the lightning in the sky
As it pass\'d me flying by---
From the thunder and the storm,
And the cloud that took the form
(When the rest of Heaven was blue)
Of a demon in my view.

In another thread there was a call for some DIY Buckethead swank.  I don\'t have any Buckethead swank, but this is something I just finished.  I have a few different decks of cards used for Divination.  I had them all wrapped in cloth.  Then I thought, hey, why not make them all a nice house.  This is for my I Ching deck.

And thank you Zintar.  It was your videos that inspired me to have a little fun and venture outside the realm of family home video.  Although I do have some great video of my kid crying at her birthday party that might go on my channel.

No problem, your clip was cool. I am very happy to inspire you.  By the way, I have a candle that I saw in your
clip. Neat-o ! Keep experimenting. I am currently having a blast here learning how to edit and author stuff. Check my most current videos to see what I mean. Up until last week, my "editing" consisted of using a pause button on a video camera or stand alone burner. hehehe. Now I will be able to get pretty
far out  ;)

Thank you.  I just do whatever creative endeavor seems like a good idea at the time.  I\'m learning the invaluable lesson of revision and the lesson of learning in general.  Some things I do work, some fail miserably.  I did that flamingo picture a few years ago.  I like that particular picture for how absolutely terrible it is.

Wishing everyone a Happy Equinox!  This is a poem I wrote in 2004.  It captures where I\'m at today, so to honor that I thought I\'d share it.

Remembering Summer's Song

I don't know where Summer has gone.
Its presence always escapes.
When I ponder seasons past in my life
I realize Summer too late.

I hasten into Fall
Craving coolness to soothe my spirit.
When I hear the brisk knock on the door
I wish it would be Summer more.

I shudder thinking of harsh Winter.
It bites with chills inside
As I watch the setting Sun die
And lament Summer passing me by.

I dream of dreary awakening Spring
A time to begin refreshing things
Life coming to abound
With hope Summer's song is joyous sound.

I don't know where Summer has gone
But its lingering melody reveals
Empowering and glorious warmth
And I remember how Summer feels.

Here is some painting I did.  I don\'t think I\'ll ever be a canvas painter.  Right now I paint glass...sometimes.  I\'d like to do some stained glass eventually.

These are Christmas ornaments I made for family & friends as gifts this past Christmas.

I feel like posting one of my poems, so I\'m going to.

Ritual Of Cleansing

I long for the Earth to swallow me
Disperse my living force among the dead
I will lay down in sorrow at my Family's side
In a wound that has recently bled

I long for the Earth to swallow me
Digest the bittersweet of blood and flesh
I will lay down as sustenance among the dying vines
And be filled with ancient breath

I long for the Earth to swallow me
I long to slip inside the ancient womb
I will lay down in the comfort of fertile living soil
And wait for my body to be exhumed

this is actually the only one i\'ve watched more than a few seconds of.  the imagery is pretty cool.  i don\'t care for the use of his officially recorded/released music though, which is why i don\'t watch the others that people have made... unless they are covering his music or they\'re using a live recording.

Thanks.  I feel special.  I take the approach of non-attachment to art.  Much of my art didn\'t come from me and therefore doesn\'t belong to me.  I was just the vehicle for an idea that came from somewhere else.  That is my belief.

I\'m not famous or anything, but I think if credit was given where credit was due things would look a lot different.

*Note* - The stuff that did come from me is usually way crappier than the stuff that didn\'t.

*Another Note* - I think Buckethead has a God given gift that he uses well, and that\'s why I\'m a fan.

I just want to wish myself a happy one year at the TDRS forum.  I\'m really glad to be here.  I\'ve been a part of other forums in the past, forums that might seem like they would hold more interest for me.  I usually end up not liking most of the people.  I don\'t not like anyone here.  Maybe a few people question whether or not they like me, but one of my favorite hobbies is confusing people.

Thanks everyone!

Well, if it\'s any consolation, I\'m not left handed.  There are just some things I\'m more comfortable doing left handed.  When I was a kid I was a left handed gymnast, I shuffel cards left handed, I played guitar left handed and wear my watch on my right hand.  I don\'t even realize I\'m doing things the opposite way until someone else points it out.

Here is a set of mala beads I made for myself.  Those prayer beads required a lot of surrender to make.  I must have restrung those (insert emphatic swearing here) beads at least 10 times.  There are 111 of them plus the guru bead.

Tomorrow I leave for my trip to the Himalayan Institute.  I\'m really looking forward to the experience.  Part of my time will be spent meditating in front of an eternal flame.  It symbolizes the flame in every heart, or the soul.  I\'m already planning to have the song Eternal Flame by the Bangles enter my mind several times throughout the weekend.  There will be no avoiding it.  I\'ll just have to incorporate it into my practice which may cause me to giggle in front of the eternal flame.  But I am pretty excited about the eternal flame.

The Link

Who on this Earth I've encountered so far
Some from my hometown
Some from distant stars

Those with whom I have walked for a while
Some for a few steps
Some for many miles

If together we conversed in spirit
Some eager to know
Some unwilling to hear it

Words that were shared I've been influenced by
Some searching for truth
Some lost in a lie

Of the times we entered each others mind
Some will stay forever
Some are left behind

And among those I've kept company with
Some live in the flesh
Some ghosts in a myth

I\'ve decided to take up tie dying.  Must be the hippie in me.  My friend and I were talking the other day about being hippies.  She said she was the Earth type hippie with hairy armpits.  I was more the psychedelic type hippie.  Anyway, here is my first shirt.

I followed the directions, but I\'m not sure how the dye will hold up after several washes because I\'ve only washed it once so far.  If anyone wants to help me practice, send me a PM and tell me what size shirt.

On Sat. I\'ll be taking a class with Yoganand.  He wrote the chapter about Swami Kripalu\'s yoga practice in the book Pilgrim Of Love.  I\'ve taken classes with him before and it\'s always profound.  Kind of like Bucketheadland, "When you come stumbling out, dirty and disoriented, you won\'t quite realize what a great deal you just got."

I go out in the yard and take a few pics.  Then I use Roxio...the same thing I use to make videos...and edit them.  The flower in the middle is just a regular picture.  Then I cut out the shapes of the other flowers and copy and paste them on.  I adjust the sizes a bit.  It\'s really easy.

As I was walkin round grosvenor square
Not a chill to the winter but a nip to the air,
From the other direction, she was calling my eye,
It could be an illusion, but I might as well try, might as well try.

She had rings on her fingers and bells on her shoes.
And I knew without askin she was into the blues.
She wore scarlet begonias tucked into her curls,
I knew right away she was not like other girls, other girls.

In the thick of the evening when the dealing got rough,
She was too pat to open and too cool to bluff.
As I picked up my matches and was closing the door,
I had one of those flashes Id been there before, been there before.

Well, I aint always right but Ive never been wrong.
Seldom turns out the way it does in a song.
Once in a while you get shown the light
In the strangest of places if you look at it right.

Well there aint nothing wrong with the way she moves,
Scarlet begonias or a touch of the blues.
And theres nothing wrong with the look thats in her eyes,

Wind in the willows playin tea for two;
The sky was yellow and the sun was blue,
Strangers stoppin strangers just to shake their hand,
Everybodys playing in the heart of gold band, heart of gold band

there You go I thought this posty needed some lyrics b4 it got buried.

Thanks ZQ.  Your lotus pic helped inspire me.  I think Wifebot mentioned something about gardening in a thread somewhere too...so thanks.

Here is a video I just finished.  My town had it\'s annual carny, which ends with fireworks.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bu8lGXhdzFw&feature=channel_page

My yoga class last night was an experience as usual.  When Yoganand teaches, he tries to create emotional disturbance with the physical challenge of the postures.  Then he encourages students to use energy and breath to reach beyond those self-imposed limitations.  He is really good at it and people react in different ways depending where their energy is.  Last night there was a lot of moaning and growling happening in the room.  It was a bit strange.  At one point, during a lot of intense moaning and growling my friend looked over at me...we may have been in down dog cuz I think she was upside down...and we both just started laughing.

Here is a garden pic.  That gnome is from my party lights.  Those flowers are another kind of begonia, hosta, beard tongue, and another one I should know but forget.

Surely you saw this one coming.  Those flowers are portulacas.

I\'ve been doing these as a way celebrating Summer Solstice.  On Sat. I found out about another holiday I think is cool.  I\'m going to make a conscious effort to celebrate it this year.  It\'s called Guru Purnima and it happens on the full Moon in July.  Apparently it\'s a great day to celebrate the Guru and receive wisdom.  I\'m going to give it a try, in my own way, and see what it\'s like.

when i was a kid.  during car rides to pass the time, my dad, my bro and i would play a game where we would look for tacky lawn ornamants and get points for each one found.  those crysal balls, old lady in blouse bending over, pink flamingos, gnomes, and anything w/ a windmill, would be 1 point.
Jesus or Mary in a bathtub or shell would be 2 points.
Any holiday ornamant that was over a month past the actual holiday was 3 points.

another game that i still play to this day is.  while walking into a store, if you notice a car in the lot w/ a lot of bumper stickers.   try and find the person inside who you think owns the car, based on the bumper stickers.

ahh...memories  ::)

^ Those games sound pretty awesome.  In general, I find the people with a lot of stickers are usually doing something ridiculous in traffic too, like cruising at 50 in the passing lane on the interstate or something like that.

I made up a game like the punch buggy game.  One day my nieces decided to play the punch buggy game and they were better than me at it and I kept getting punched so I made up the "mini van wood panneling" game and started punching back.  I tried to think of the longest possible thing to say to confuse them.

Here is another pic.  I was kind of bummed when I realized that I missed my irises to do these collages because they bloomed earlier, but I put some bulbs in last year and they formed flowers a few days after I was bummed.  The other flowers are ageratum, and they are the Blue Hawaii color.  Also...there is a cameo by a spider.  I have more flowers to photograph, but it\'s raining today so I don\'t know if I\'ll be able to take any pics.

Here is a poem I\'m sharing as part of my Solstice celebration.

Ever Onward Flowing

Daydream
Sparkle
Twinkle in my eye
Taking a ride on whichever transport moves me
Any and all means, by land, sea or air
Where do I go?
I'll know when I'm there
Somewhere
In the space-time continuum continuing ever onward
Forward
Full speed ahead
Flowing the directions in which I am lead
With landmarks to keep me in the familiar
I plot my path among the colors and lights
I marvel at marvelous things to look at
I glance and gaze at all the sights
And I try to take them in
For they are all part of where I've been
And also part of where I am going
Ever onward flowing

To end my Solstice celebration I made this little video to remember it by.

In my earlier years I actually joined a coven of witches.  I used to go into the woods in a black robe and cast circles and dance around fires.  Seriously.  That is where my user name comes from...calling the elements.  I still do practice some things I learned during that time.

Be sure and check out my new Summer Solstice toy...it\'s the lighter!

::)  I love that song.  ( and the Muppets )

Why are there so many songs about rainbows
and what\'s on the other side?
Rainbows are visions, but only illusions,
and rainbows have nothing to hide.
So we\'ve been told and some choose to believe it.
I know they\'re wrong, wait and see.
Someday we\'ll find it, the rainbow connection.
The lovers, the dreamers and me.

Who said that every wish would be heard
and answered when wished on the morning star?
Somebody thought of that and someone believed it.
Look what it\'s done so far.
What\'s so amazing that keeps us star gazing
and what do we think we might see?
Someday we\'ll find it, the rainbow connection.
The lovers, the dreamers and me.

All of us under its spell. We know that it\'s probably magic.

Have you been half asleep and have you heard voices?
I\'ve heard them calling my name.
Is this the sweet sound that called the young sailors.
The voice might be one and the same.
I\'ve heard it too many times to ignore it.
It\'s something that I\'m supposed to be.
Someday we\'ll find it, the rainbow connection.
The lovers, the dreamers and me.

I\'m going here on Sunday for the Mantra Meditation Retreat...http://www.kripalvanandayogainstitute.org/index.html

I\'m really looking forward to it.  It is where Swami Kripalu did his sadhana and I\'m sure the energy of the place itself is going to be moving...plus the mantra meditation.  Some practices should come with the "do not operate heavy machinery" warning label.  This will probably be one of them.

Here is a poem to the Earth

The North, the earth, the growth, the truth
Spiritual guide and living proof

One food for life alone
Grown of mineral, plant, and bone

Earth cultivator
Rooted in self
Fruits of labor
Barren in wealth

Self cultivator
Rooted in earth
Fruits of labor
Priceless in worth

Union of mind, heart, and hand
Return to the fertile land

The North, the earth, the growth, the truth
Spiritual path to living root

That place is so awesome.  I\'m gonna share a funny story about me and my yoga buddy.  The space where Swami K. did his sadhana is beyond description to me.  I was sitting there and thinking, OMG, Swami K. did yoga right in the exact same place I\'m sitting.  Well, my yoga buddy used the bathroom and thought, Swami K\'s a$$ sat on this same toilet.  Someone\'s gotta keep it real.

As I was backing out of my garage Hilikus by Incubus was playing.  When I was pulling out of the driveway the song changed to Hills of Eternity by Buckethead.  I thought that was a nice way to start my trip...that\'s the alphabetical order.

I also got my picture taken with a bust of the Swami.  I hope it comes out good.

* I also want to add that, despite my complete lack of musical ability, I played a pretty mean tambourine today during our chanting.

Since today is the 40th anniversary of man landing on the Moon, and it\'s Monday, and Shiva is a Moon guy...  I thought I\'d post a pic of my Shiva Nataraj statue.  I really went all out on that statue.  I made his outfit and put hair on him.  He didn\'t have hair.  Actually, he was missing a finger too, so I made a finger for him.  That\'s  what started the whole thing.  I made braclets for his arms and legs and I used a broken gold chain I had to wrap around him.  I decorated his drum and did a little touch up painting with nail polish.  I think he looks awesome!  I did a little color enhancing on the picture.

I should have 3 or 4 more of these collages, in case anyone is trying to collect \'em all.  I\'m not really one to toot my own horn, but they are pretty nice when you get them all together.  I just moved them into their own photobucket album and then had to replace all the links here.  What a hassle.  I almost said eh screw it...  but here is the latest one.

The flowers are pincushions and a blue one I wish I knew but forget.  Most of my garden is perennial.  I think it\'s easier that way.

It sounds like you already know what you want.  Why don\'t you just tell the tattoo artist and have them draw something up?  That is part of their job.  That\'s what I did when I got my tattoo, shortly after turning 18.  I said here is an idea of what I want, you draw it.  I\'m not really that creative with stuff like that.

I have a purple peace sign with fire on one side and a rainbow on the other side and an X-men symbol at the top.  It\'s on my butt.  It was either that or a battleship on my forearm.

Wow!  I feel special.  I\'m really glad people like my collages.  I usually start decorating for Halloween soon and I was thinking about doing the collages with my Halloween decorations.

I really don\'t think the fashion world is for me though.  I like doing these for fun, but if I had to do them for real it porbably wouldn\'t be fun for me anymore.

At the end of this month I\'ll be going to Kripalu for a week long workshop about how to design creative workshops.  http://www.kripalu.org/program/view/DDWT91/shaktipat_workshops_divining_and_designing_workshops
When I go to these places I like to check out my teachers and make sure they are authentic, just so I don\'t drink the kool-aid if you know what I mean.  There is a lot of nonsense in the spiritual community, just like any other place.

Anyway, my goal is to teach meditation.  So, we\'ll see how that goes.

Here is the last garden collage.  I thought Labor Day was a good day to post it.  Actually, I just finished it last night, so it worked out.

I\'m pretty excited because I\'m working on writing my first guided visualization/meditation and it is pirate themed.

If anyone is interested in Kirtan, this guy is a must see.  I\'m going in October and I\'m really grateful for the opportunity.  I\'m not sure how much touring he does.

The last time I was at a Kirtan, I headbanged while playing the harmonium.

I thought I\'d share some thoughts here...

Halloween is one of those days that I consider to be magical.  So despite the fact that something terrible happened, part of me was thinking, well at least it\'s Halloween.

Anyway, it was a rough day for all of us, but my little girl had the worst of it.  She kept saying "drums" in the hospital and I was thinking she\'s got to be a little delirious after all this.  But kids are naturally tuned in.

Obviously I did a lot of praying and I prayed to Shiva and to Swami Kripalu and just the Universe in general.  Some of you may be rolling your eyes at this point, but whatever.

So,  we were home and I went into my meditation space and sat down to do whatever.  It was then I realized the finger on my Shiva Nataraj.  The one I fixed on that statue is one of his right index fingers and it is the hand that is holding his damaru drum.  At my initiation I gave a damaru as my offering to the guru.

I also got a gift from Swami Rama.  I realize that sounds absurd.  But I\'ve been wanting an ivy plant and today I was given one with a peacock feather in it.  I associate Swami Rama with peacocks.

All I can do is say Thank You to the Universe.

It\'s been 1 week and my little girls finger is healing up nicely.  For the most part, it looks pretty good.  I\'m not sure if she has feeling in it, but hopefully time will help with that.  She is using her hand (almost) normally again.

Thanks to all who wished her well!

A funny story about those sequins is...  About 2 summers ago I fell down my stairs.  Rather surprising really.  But I was carrying my container of sequins and when my feet went out from under me, the lid flew off and sequins flew everywhere.  In slow motion it might have looked like I was luging out of a cloud of sequins.  I fell all the way down and, like I said, I was rather surprised when I landed at the bottom.  Luckily I wasn\'t hurt, just some major bruises.

Then I had to clean them all up.

really well one summer ago in 08 I feel down in the Ny subway down some stairs b bump pity bump pity and whenever I mention it everyone presumes I fell on the tracks...

In October I fell thru a Cattle grat at My Uncles Memorial Servic helping an Old Lady across it, I had a funny feeling that something was going to happen..

I rather it be Me then Her, Something was watching out for Me as I was spared the broken leg or snapping My Ankle in a strange place, I believe it was My Uncle.

Keep up the Artwork Photo\'s I dig\'m...

Check out Shivaratri

That is what I\'m looking forward to celebrating next.  It kind of falls near Chinese New Year too, so, it should be a good time.

I\'m not going to stay up all night or anything like that.  I\'m just going to honor the time in my own way.  I may give one of my Shiva statues a bath or something like that.  Sounds crazy, I know.

It\'s been fun taking the pictures of those books because I can kind of tell what the story is about by looking at them.  Like, the first one was about kites or things in the air because a lot of the kids are pointing up during the story like they are excited about something.  Goiter man must have some moral lesson to it.  Well, I guess they all do, but goiter man doesn\'t really have a happy ending.

3 more books to go.
