Title: favorite albums of all time...
Post by: Duckhead on February 02, 2010, 09:29:47 am
I was thinking (I know I shouldn\'t)... what are some of your favorite non-Buckethead albums, one\'s that get regular rotation on your hi-fi or ipod. I could write a list of at least 100 but will limit myself to 5. After a few people list some of their favorites I\'ll post a few more (I already have 5 more ready ;) )

Anyone else listen to these?

Poco\'s self titled album

Jeff Waynes War of the Worlds

Sof Cell, Non Stop Erotic Cabaret

Pepper, Kona Town

Putumayo Arabic Groove

Well, Pink Floyd is my favorite band of all time and The Wall is my favorite Floyd album so it stands to reason that The Wall is my favorite album of all time.

Hmmm...  It\'s been awhile since I\'ve listened to the whole Wall.  I\'m going to do it now.

I find these types of lists vexing! But this is just a snapshot, I listen to music constantly.

In no particular order:

Led Zeppelin IV
Led Zeppelin Houses of the Holy
Faith No More King for a day, Fool for a Lifetime
Metallica Kill \'em All
Mr Bungle California

I guess I\'m in a classic rock mood lately!?

I thought i was the only one who listened to
Jeff Waynes War of the Worlds..haha!

Other all time favorites
Kiss "Dressed to kill"
Black Dahlia Murder "Unhallowed"
Pantera "Vulgar display of power"
Iron Maiden "Killers or Number of the beast"

but ..other than that it\'s mostly the Deli creeps and Buckethead :)

Lots of good albums listed, I guess most of my albums are a little obscure - here are 5 of my favorite "classics"

Jimi Hendrix - Axis: Bold as Love
Van Halen II
Dire Straits - Money for Nothing
Oingo Boingo - Only a Lad
Meatloaf - Bat out of Hell (how can you not love this album?)

Slaw - Quadrophenia is Awesome, love that one!!! The movie too!

D M - stoked to know another Jeff Wayne fan - UlladubUlla! Have you listened to his Spartacus?

Ella - the Wall is great, must have listened to it and Dark Side of the Moon 1,000 times each in high school but I think Wish You Were Here is my fav.

Stump - toss up for me between Houses and Physical Graffiti. I did a term paper on Stairway to Heaven in college - gotta A!

Some great stuff there Duckhead. I can\'t quibble with Physical Graffiti at all. Worth the price of admission for "In My Time of Dying" alone. Then you\'ve got the rest of the album to contend with.! SHEESH! How did one band do that? So diverse, yet cohesive. Another album A Night at the Opera by Queen I\'m gonna go get that one the next chance I get! It has been a long time since I\'ve heard that one at one sitting.

Not an album but it\'s 51 years ago today since "the music died":

"a long, long time ago..."

my dad bought this 45...you had to turn it over 1/2 way through to hear the complete song.

The Cure:
Standing on the Beach and Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me

The Beatles:
A Hards Day Night

Quincy Jones:
Go West, Man

Dave Brubeck
Time Out

I am going to look up Jeff Wayne.

ya know the problem with these kinds of lists are that you need one for every genre of music, and as soon as you think of 5 albums another 1, 2 or 10 pop in your head.

I forgot to mention Patti Smith - I love her! Gung Ho is a GREAT album. Anyone else like her?

Slaw - you\'re a Jazz fan?  There are so many great Jazz albums and artists, I don\'t listen to near enough. Off the top of my head a few of my Jazz fav\'s are:

Ken Nordine - Word Jazz

Michael Franks - the Art of Tea

Billy Cobham - Spectrum (Cobham is so awesome!!)

Coltane - a Love Supreme

St Germain - Tourist

Guess I am, Duck.  I like a lot of different types of music.  Also love Big Band and swing.  My fave jazz artisits are Sonny Rollins, Eddie Harris, Dave Brubeck (whom I see every year at the Tarrytoen Music Hall; tho\' unfortunately I think last year was the last), Modern Jazz Quartet....and on and on.
I love Doo Wop!!  And the old standards singers: Chris Connor (think we had a convo on her), June Christy etal.  And of course,  The Who, The Beatles, The Cure, Queen...and that other guy...what\'s his name? oh Buckethead!!!

I "discovered" the Tineke Postma Quartet last year:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wzxr76JUwBc
(very shakey; hard to watch; just listen)

went off topic...sorry!!!

My yoga buddy is a big Patti Smith fan.  From what I gather she plays in NYC every year a few days around NYE.  My friend goes to see her there every now and again.  She just went in Dec. and loved it, as she usually does.

Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath always makes my list of top albums for straight raw sound.

It was interesting in that she spoke about their time when they were really young, when they first got to New York and met each other, and continued to support each other through the years. Enjoy!

I\'ve been trying to avoid this thread because I knew I\'d have as much difficulty coming up with my favorite albums as everyone else has.

Let me give a little background because I feel it\'s necessary. I\'ve bounced around in the past few years in regards to my overall favorite band(s).

For a few years, I thought Beatles, Tom Petty, and Uriah Heep were my favorite bands. Then I became a huge Thin Lizzy fan and bought all 12 of their studio albums. Then I became a huge Black Sabbath fan and bought the Black Box (which includes all Ozzy-era studio albums). I also bought the Dio-era Black Sabbath albums, too, which include Heaven & Hell, Mob Rules, and Dehumanizer. I even bought 9 of Iron Maiden\'s albums when I thought they were my favorite band.

As you can see, I have a tough time making up my mind. :P Now, I honestly can\'t tell you who my favorite artist is because even I don\'t know who that is. ;)

Without further digression, I will post 5 albums that I think everyone should hear before they die. These are not necessarily my favorite albums of all time, but they definitely rank high on my list. Also, please keep in mind that my favorite genres are rock and metal, so that\'s what these albums will be from. I should qualify that last statement with the word "CLASSIC." I prefer CLASSIC rock and metal to any other genre. (In my opinion, almost all modern stuff sucks. Buckethead is obviously a rare exception in my book because I think he kicks ass.)

1) Uriah Heep - Demons & Wizards

Comment: I\'m flat-out shocked that no one even mentioned Uriah Heep. They were an absolutely killer band back in the day (before I was born), and they\'re still around today in a reincarnated sense. Their original vocalist, David Byron, is possibly the BEST rock/metal vocalist of ALL TIME in my book.

Song: The Wizard
Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eq8nQOhZ3u8

2) Thin Lizzy - Black Rose: A Rock Legend

Comment: When I was a huge Thin Lizzy fan, this was my favorite album. I still love this album. I\'m very glad Thin Lizzy was at least mentioned in this thread. I would say this album ties with Thin Lizzy\'s best-known album, Jailbreak, as their best.

Song: Waiting For An Alibi
Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gLjMmZ8D0E4

3) Iron Maiden - Iron Maiden

Comment: It is often believe that The Number of the Beast is Iron Maiden\'s best album. That\'s a good album, but my favorite has always been their debut album with their original singer, Paul Di\'Anno.

Song: Remember Tomorrow
Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jagHzPDjfWU

4) Black Sabbath - Mob Rules

Comment: What? "Mob Rules?" What the heck album is that? It\'s a non-Ozzy album. I\'ve always liked the Dio albums more. Yeah, Paranoid, Master of Reality, and Vol. 4 are good. Mob Rules is different. In my opinion, Dio\'s albums are a breath of fresh air after hearing Ozzy on vocals for 8 albums.

Song: Turn Up the Night
Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ngVVAGw9MI8

5) Judas Priest - British Steel

Comment: British Steel is one of the greatest metal albums of all time. It\'s as close to perfection as an album can get. Judas Priest has made some other great albums, but British Steel will always be on top.

Song: Living After Midnight (Live!)
Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RzpHmbwqHLM

There you have it! These are, in my opinion, must-have albums if you like classic rock or metal. These albums provide some of the best examples of music in their respective genres.

Yes, I\'m posting again already. I\'ve decided to post 5 more albums. Since the first 5 I posted are relatively well-known groups (although this is arguable with Uriah Heep), I will now post 5 albums that are somewhat unknown but deserve to be heard just as much. These albums are somewhat rare, so I\'ll try and post 2 songs for each one.

1) Manilla Road - Crystal Logic

Comment: This is a KILLER metal album. In my opinion, this album beats out almost all well-known metal groups of past and present. Turn your volume up to max, and prepare to headbang before clicking the links! ;D

Song 1: The Riddle Master
Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zw8DbztO_Pc

Song 2: Necropolis
Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LWvQVln9fAU

2) Quartz - Stand Up and Fight

Comment: Another great metal album by another practically unheard-of metal group.

Song 1: Charlie Snow
Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mItAxi0Vkwc

Song 2: Stoking Up the Fires of Hell
Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fpwA2oNBc6Q

3) Tytan - Rough Justice

Comment: Tytan only released one album. Rough Justice is it. Tytan was co-formed by former members of the metal band Angel Witch and a few other people. The original vocalist/guitarist of Angel Witch, Kevin Heybourne, is a member of Angel Witch who did not form Tytan.

Song 1: The Watcher
Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DWENOw1ww4c

Song 2: Rude Awakening
Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QJjbsg9PlU0

4) Captain Beyond - Captain Beyond

Comment: Captain Beyond is more of a classic hard rock group than classic metal. Their debut album is their best, and the other two albums they released are also good.

Song 1: Mesmerization Eclipse
Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UvZjDuiyUg4

Song 2: Raging River of Fear
Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O9_pDY8SSBQ

5) Saxon - Unleash the Beast

Comment: Saxon is probably the most-known group of the five I\'ve listed here. Still, their Unleash the Beast album is almost never mentioned as one of their good albums.

Song 1: Cut Out the Disease (Live! - Beginning has an explicit word!)
Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6pTcHhXFI3o

Song 2: Circle of Light
Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TMbqWChNtyM

I hope you all enjoyed my two posts in this thread! I hope you\'ve learned of some new groups here! I may add a third list later if I think of something to post. I apologize in advance if some of the links don\'t work. They should, but they get shut down a LOT on that site.

QuoteIron Maiden - Somewhere in Time
Ah, yes. I had this album at one point. My favorite song on it is probably Sea of Madness or Deja Vu. The only song I think is just average is The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner, but that song has the best guitar solo of the whole album (if I recall correctly). The rest were all decent songs. Wasted Years, Alexander the Great, Stranger in a Strange Land, and of course, Somewhere in Time...cool. Makes me wonder why I sold that album. :(

Another one to toss on the heap of favorite albums of all time:

Def Leppard - On Through the Night

If you think you know Def Leppard, but you haven\'t heard this album, you don\'t know what the REAL Leppard was capable of. They kicked arse more on this album than any after it.

Devin Townsend- Ki
The first album since Strapping Yound Lad broke up. I LOVE it. It has made me feel better about things so many times.

Dream Theater-Systematic Chaos
As a drummer, Dream Theater just blows my mind. This is the album that got me into, and changed my views on music forever. It\'s also just a nice blend of all of their types of sounds.

Faith No More-Angel Dust
I found this album when I was going through a really dark time, and it pretty much musically summed up the way I felt when I found it. I love Mike Patton\'s vocals, and the really stood out on this album to me.

Death-Symbolic
Love Gene Hoglan, and Chuck. Love the lyrics, and this was another album that when I first heard it, things changed for me.

Bumblefoot- Abnormal
I know it\'s probably bad that I\'m admitting that I love Bumblefoot on a Buckethead forum, but it was a really well made album. "DASH" is awesome.

I also love a lot of John Zorn, and of course Bootsy Collins, Les Claypool, and Bill laswell, but it\'s hard for me to determine my favorites from them.

I would have to pick 10 from my favorite genre METAL!  although I listen to many styles.

1.  Black Sabbath- Sabotage
2.  Judas Priest- Unleashed in the East Live
3.  Iron Maiden- Powerslave
4.  Metallica- Master of Puppets
5.  S.O.D.- Live @ Budakon
6.  Slayer- Reign in Blood
7.  Anthrax-Spreading the Disease
8.  Megadeth- Rust in Peace
9.  Pantera-  Far Beyond Driven
10- Morbid Angel- Blessed are the Sick

This is sort of my chronolgy of what I call the Golden Age of Metal late 70\'s to early 90\'s.
