Title: Myopia construction kit
Post by: Travis on August 04, 2011, 07:00:16 pm
I\'m getting ready to present the Myopia Construction Kit page and files. Here is the read me for it. Does this make sense if I give these instruction and the sound files. The whole thing will be in a zip file about 40 megabits in size. Before I put this up I want it to work for everyone who wants to play with this. Any input is appreciated.. Here\'s from the read-me:

Inside this folder you will find the following files.
All files are 16 bit 44.1 Wav files.
If you have Pro Tools you will also find a PT session file created in PT 8.
If you are using something else, here's how to set the session up as it was presented in the Alt Mix mp3 on the Thanatopsis 10th year anniversary page.

Create a new session in whatever music software you use with a tempo of 136 bpm and 4/4 time.
Create 4 stereo tracks and 6 mono tracks.

Name the stereo tracks:

Drums
Moog-Arp
Ryth Guitar
Strings

Name the mono tracks:

Drum-loop
Bass
Gtr
Gtr-2
Synth

Use the bar-beat map below to populate the tracks.
The first number is the bar and beat.
The next part is the name of the sound file and the number after the x is
the number of times you need to past that region.

I\'m sorry Travis, but I do not understand what this is about, one single bit.

I have limited experience but I get the idea.  Sounds like it will be easy if you have Pro-Tools... and a bit of puzzle piecing if you don\'t.

Totally excited to get my hands on this.  To me it\'s the stand out track on the disk.

any chance you could just release a version of the song without drums? i mostly just wanna drum along, maybe make my own drum-remix.

I guess I should have explained what this is a little better.
This is the multi track of the song. The tracks are all broken out so if you want to remove the drums and play your own, or play guitar, or sing, totally take this apart and but it back together you can. I\'m giving the raw material to do anything you want. Construct a completely new version or just add your solo to this one.

Yes, it will be easier if you have Pro Tools, but it\'s pretty easy if you don\'t, I tried and it only took a few minuets to put the song back together from the files. That is if you want to start from the song as it is. You don\'t need to, you can just grab the bits and start putting something together. All the files are made up of 1 or 2 measure files.

Why, am I doing this? Well I thought this would be a good way to collaborate with everyone interested in making music as a celebration of the first Thanatopsis CD.

I\'m putting together a space where I hope you will post what you come up with. I would like to hear your mix\'s, mash ups, solos, write a bridge add vocals and lyrics, do a drum track or add loops, whatever. I hope you will post your individual files as well so others can use them. And I\'ll make contributions as well.

I know a lot of the people who visit here are musicians and I though it might be fun to see what you come up with.

Right now, I\'m gauging in the interest level in doing this and how I can make it easier to make use of these files.
So any feedback in appreciated before I post the files.

I\'ll be using Audacity to simply re-edit the song and perhaps add some noise so for me it\'ll just be a case of piecing things together like a jigsaw.

Sounds awesome! I love this kind of stuff. Looks like I will have to get cubase activated on my new computer.

I might grab those files and have a play...

+1 for the DAW neutral approach. The way you do it, with the audio files and the track maps is just fine. I\'m using Cubase BTW (just about to upgrade to version 6).

I was going to download it today, for some reason i thought it was already posted.

This would be the first time that i would do anything like this. I cant wait, but i dont promise anything good. ;D ;D

I would use Audacity if that could be used. I dont have any other way of making it, unless someone else recomends me another free software to do it

I\'ll have everything posted sometime this week. The set up for this is complicated and I want to get everything sorted before we get started.

As far software to use. I looked into Audacity but the problem with that is you can\'t create a bar and beat grid with it. To put the song in the order it started as and to make working with the files easier, a program that let\'s you make a session with a bar and beat grid is necessary. Now, you don\'t have to do it this way. If you just want to string these files together and make mash ups then Audacity would be fine.

I\'m a Mac guy so I\'m not familiar with free programs you could use with a PC.
I know there are lot\'s of commercial programs like Cakewalk but perhaps somebody here is familiar with a free program for PC.

PC guy, but I wish I was a Mac guy. Audacity should be fine for me. I use it a lot and have a knack for lining things up bar for bar after years of practice. Any other effects I want to add I can do in FL Studio, or see if I can use my friend\'s copy of Reason.

Also, thanks for the CD Travis, just got it today. 10 years, buddy!

Well, my cubase has expired and it\'s the limited so they won\'t let me renew it!  :\'( I only use audacity for sound fx and changing volume of audio. I hate how it doesn\'t have measures. Flstudio has measures and might get this job done.

Zip files are just an archive. You unzip them with a utility. I think it\'s built into Windows so you just double click on the file and the folder thats inside with the wavs files is placed on your desktop. If not get the free stuffit utilities.

Hope to have this available tomorrow or Wednesday.

The Myopia Construction Kit Project is now open.
Because this board is so old and the software lacking in functions I have moved this over to my own forum at travisdickerson.com.

You will need to register there to have access to the Construction Kit files. If you have trouble registering or accessing the forum feel free to ask but let\'s keep all the actual discussion of the Kit over there if we can. Go here if you would like to participate.
