Title: Good movie anyone?
Post by: Duckhead on November 25, 2007, 05:41:17 am
I was hoping I could get a few movie recommendations. I am not a big fan of Hollywood Blockbusters or overpaid actors but watch them occasionally (the Big Lebowski is one of my fav's along with Shawshank Redemption to name a couple). I am a big fan of "B" movies and cult classics or anything odd. One of my favorite movies is "Zachariah", if you haven't seen it you can get it from Netflix. As for horror films nothing beats Evil Dead 1 & 2 for me. What are some of your favorite movies, hopefully something I haven't seen.

Too many to list, but I'm currently watching "Galaxy Quest" it really is a cleaver movie.

"Name of the Rose" - A must see in my opinion
"The Lion in Winter" - another must see
"Dogma" - worth it if only to see Silent Bob talk
"Garbo Talks" - I loved this movie as a teenager, but it's been so long it might have been a case of "I want to appear more grown up than I really am" (warning: chick flick.)
"Love Actually" - Sweet romance (not a chick flick, unless you don't like romances)
"Cherry 2000" a horrible movie, but a guilty pleasure
"Mr Frost" - head case horror film, gave me the willies
"Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey" - Death is hilarious, he makes the movie.
"Gallipoli" - Mel Gibson before he got all...well...Mel Gibsonnie
"The Runner Stumbles"
"Yellow Submarine"
"Gattaca"

Not necessarily favorites, but somewhere in the top 100 or so.

Thank you buswolley - I have seen a few on your list but a majority are new for me. I know what you mean by there are too many to list. Gattica is a good movie- it has a Logan's Run feel to it. I thought Contact was another good sci-fi (I can go on and on about sci-fi movies, if you like sci-fi everyone should see Metropolis - an oldie but a goodie!). Galaxy Quest is pretty funny. I've seen Cherry 2000, real cheesy but I like cheesy. For kids age 6-14 (and parents too) the 70's classic Kenny & Co is great, I highly recommend it.  Brazil (more sci-fi), Station Agent & Whale Rider are on my list too. Since it is the Holiday season everyone should watch the original Christmas Carol starring Alistair Sim! It beats all the other holiday movies hands down!

Post by: buswolley on November 29, 2007, 02:32:34 am
Yes, Gattica is very Logan's Run like, but a better story.
Contact was very interesting.  I thought the dream sequence/contact was too simple, but I don't think they could have done anything that would really satisfy.  I'm a sci-fi fan myself, but a sucker for a good story no matter the genre.  I haven't seen most of the movies on your list, but I will.  Whale Rider is a very good movie.  You might also like Rabbit Proof Fence.  My favorite Christmas film is Miracle of 34th Street (1947) with Edmund Gwenn and Natalie Wood

Oldies but goodies (must see):
The Dirty Dozen
Bird Man of Alcatraz
A Man Called Horse
And always, Cool Hand Luke.

My husband and I watched The Departed a few nights ago.  I recommend, but it doesn't make the must see list.

The last movie I actually paid to see was Dragon Wars (my husband's idea.  We get out maybe once or twice a year and he had to pick this one *rolls eyes*)  The worst movie perhaps ever made.  I have never walked out of a theater, and I still haven't, but I came very close with this one.

Edit: oohh...Serching for Bobby Fischer

if you like Evil Dead and Coen Bros. there is an older Sam Raimi movie co written w/ the Coen Bros. that also has Bruce Campbell called Crime Wave.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is essential

If you like gore it doesn\'t get any gorier than Peter Jackson\'s Dead Alive

Suspiria is a real good Italian suspense movie with good gore
and excellent cinematography.

Can\'t believe you mentioned this, watched it last night-wow! Viggo was awesome. I\'m still thinking about the ending right now.

I was wondering as I was watching the movie, there was an Azim\'s Barbershop in the movie, do you think Bucket tied that in a long time ago with Azzim\'s Lectures on Funnelweaver (even though they are spelled slightly differently)-due to him playing on Viggo\'s albums?  I don\'t know, there\'s probably too much time on my hands...

That was a great scene-he was just sitting there with a towel. Imagine going from that to trying to save your own life? I loved when the second killer gets stabbed in the eye.

Also, speaking of knives, how about those throat scenes with the barber\'s razor? Yeow!

Just watched a very weird, disturbing yet interesting and thought provoking movie called LUNACY by Jan Svankmajer. It\'s categorized as horror but it is more of the philosophical type. The director calls it "an infantile homage to the writings of Edgar Alan Poe", specifically The System of Doctor Tarr and Professor Fether and The Premature Burial . I am very intersted in seeing other films by Svankmajer, it was pretty good - two thumbs up. It is a foriegn film (Czech) with english subtitles so if you don\'t like to read then don\'t rent it. I am pretty sure you can pick it up on netflix, I stumbled upon it at the used dvd store (also found Flesh for the Beast -  ;Dstoked).  More info here: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0407236/

BTW Nuff - watched Network on your recommendation, GREAT movie! I enjoyed it but it made me mad because as you said it mirrors todays news programs - ratings and greed outweigh journalistic integrity.

Yes, the best Batman movie ever, in my opinion. The Joker was a very believable sociopath-just an evil dude. See it on the big screen first if you get a chance you\'ll be glad you did.

Heath Ledger was the best acting performance I have ever seen. Hands down.

For the next Batman there is a good chance that it will be Johnny Depp as the Riddler. I can\'t wait! He chose another great actor (Depp) and another villain whom Christopher Nolan will make a great revamp of.

it\'s listed as a comedy-drama

as far as the DVR i highly recommend it.  i don\'t believe i\'d watch television without it.  my habits are odd and i\'ll usually just tune in for a minute to see if anything interesting is going to be showing on IFC or Sundance and the surrounding channels, set it to record this & that and then when i have time to actually kill watching TV, i\'ve got something cool to check out.  it\'s nice.  on the rare occasion i record something with commercials i can forward through them.  also quite nice.  i need to pick up a dvd recorder one of these days also because you can copy the movies from your DVR onto DVD and keep them.  pretty sweet.  wouldn\'t mind transferring a bunch of episodes of the Henry Rollins show and 30 Days that i have sitting on there taking up room.

No.  I don\'t watch many scary movies because they thoroughly scare me.  I have a LOW tolerance for that kind of stuff.  Like, I was afraid there was a raptor in my house after watching Jurassic Park, and a mummy in my hallway after Bubba Ho-tep, and I thought the girl from The Ring was in the back seat of my car for about 2 months.  What\'s funny is that I remember laughing pretty hard during The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and to this day think The Exorcist was lame.  But I don\'t push it...cuz I never know.

I picked up 3 old vhs horror movies at a garage sale yesterday for 50¢ each and I was suprised how much I liked them.

Death Spa (1988 ) great campy style horror film with mostly cheesy actors (also has Robert Lipton and Ken Foree who I like). Full-on over the top death scenes filled with blood and gore, personally I love these types of movies.

Eaten Alive (1977) this is directed by Tobe Hooper who also directed Texas Chainsaw Massacre/Poltergiest/etc, and has Robert Englund (Freddy Kruger) in it. Never saw this before and like all of Tobe\'s movies - this was great!

Shock Waves (1977) with Peter Cushing - A low budget "Zombie" movie that isn\'t that gory, it\'s more implied. Again, for all us cheesy horror film lovers this is pretty good.

wow, can\'t beat that deal.

Eaten Alive is a good one and let us not forget, starring the ever gagged & tied Marilyn Burns :)

if they ever remake that one I hope Tobe will call Bill Moseley.  he\'d do a fine job as Judd the hotel owner.

anyhow, i\'m talking about the 2008 movie with Malkovich and Jolie.  good one.

I was stoked to pick up a bunch of dvds last weekend at a yard sale, all for $1ea  ;D

One that I got is Cannibal Holocaust - Ok, I have heard of this movie but never saw it until now - OMG, what a disturbing movie (especially the animals that were killed on screen), I really don\'t know what to say about it, it freaked me out the way a good horror movie should but it also freaked me out like I\'m gonna sleep with the lights on for a few nights.

Just wondering if anyone else has seen it and what they think.

I had a roommate in college who wrote a paper about that movie.  She watched it on and off for about 2 weeks.  I avoided it as much as possible.  I did watch enough to see horrible acting and that made me wonder what kind of people would head off into the jungle and do such a thing.  That\'s the part I found disturbing.

Double Dare (2005)

I have mentioned before that I am a huge Xena fan so I picked up a copy of this movie because it is a documentary about Zoe Bell stuntwoman for Lucy Lawless and Jeannie Epper stuntwoman for the original Wonder Woman, Lynda Carter. If you like documentaries this is a great movie with fun interviews and great behind the scenes action sequences. Recently Zoe Bell has also taken up acting, notably in Tarantino\'s Death Proof.

I just saw Harry Potter.  I liked it.  I\'m a Harry Potter fan.  Probably when all the movies are on dvd we will have a Harry Potter screening party.

We did that with LOTR, the extended versions.  We hooked up a bunch of tvs around the house and named different rooms like Gondor, The Shire...  stuff like that.  And we named the food for LOTR too.  We had Frodo fingers wrapped in bacon...  which were actually lit\'l smokies wrapped in bacon.  It was fun.

I just saw Into The Wild last night. I read the book a while back and thought it was great despite Krakauer\'s style of writing which is a bit wordy and off topic at times. Hey nuff_said (or anyone else),
did you watch Angel of Death starring Zoe Bell (and also featured Lucy Lawless and Ted Raimi) last night on Spike? You probably already know this but it was originally a 10 part webisode that was put together as a full length movie and now being released as a dvd. It aires again on the 31st on Spike. It wasn\'t the best movie but I really enjoyed watching it. I hope to see Zoe in more movies, maybe an apocolyptic sci-fi thriller with her as the heroine (I can see her as a female Mad Max type). Anyway here is link to the imdb page http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1269734/

Just watched "Big Trouble in Little China" last nite, probably hadn\'t seen it since it was in the theaters eons ago. Pretty good fun flick, I\'ve always liked Kurt Russel.

I think I am going on a John Hughs binge this weekend. For those who didn\'t hear, he passed away this week. John made some of the best movies ever imo, Sixteen Candles, Wierd Science, Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller, Vacation and a ton of others. We need more great writers like him in Hollywood, hw will be missed.

One of Bruce Lee\'s finest moments: him pitted against Chuck Norris. And it\'s a very convincing fight too. I freaking loved this movie.

World\'s Greatest Dad and Sleeping Dogs Lie
I concur with what my friend, Rob, wrote me in an e-mail:

i just watched this one - i really liked it a lot.  i\'m not religous at all, but this movie makes a lot of good points and i love that people get off their asses and do something about stuff that upsets them - they\'re spreading awareness and being themselves - can\'t argue with that

The world according to Monsanto http://www.bangmfood.org/films/22-films/4-film-review-the-world-according-to-monsanto

If you found Food Inc interesting then you will enjoy this documentary as well. Monsanto is the company that produces Roundup as well as many genetically modified seeds such as soybean and cotton. Not only does this movie breakdown the science about harmful GMO's but also exposes the policy and laws, and misleading info by the fda and other gov't agencies that helped them come about. It also talks about the harmful and immoral business practice of the Monsanto company. Even though it is a little depressing and anger evoking, the information gained is empowering and a useful tool for conscientious minds.

Duckhead, I don\'t know if you\'re still looking for movie suggestions, but I\'ve got one: Phantasm. It\'s not the best movie in the world, but it\'s entertaining. I\'ve only seen the first in the series. It\'s got all of the characteristics you said in the main post: B movie, cult, and odd. It\'s a horror film from a long time ago, and I really like the main antagonist. He\'s one of the cooler evil guys I\'ve seen in a movie, but I don\'t watch a lot of movies.

The World According to Monsanto

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=6262083407501596844#

From the movie:

Paraguay farmer Jorge Galeano, when asked about Monsanto soy beans:  "what we have here is an example of a GM extension of soy beans.  in fact, its a monocrop that destroys everything in its path.  before here, there were fields that contained everything that a family needed to live.  plants, trees, monyok, corn."  when asked if the GM crop can co-exist with the crops of the small farmers he replies "no.  we\'re sure it can\'t.  they are two incompatible models that can\'t coexist.  its a silent war that eliminates communities and families of small farmers.  in addition, it destroys the biodiversity of the country side.  it brings death, poverty, and illness, as well as the destruction of the natural resources that help us live."

I just found this website that lets you watch several B-quality, horror movies for free.

I\'m posting the link to the free movies page, but be sure to hover your mouse over the "free movies" menu at the top to see all of the available movies.

Once you pick a movie, you may have to refresh the page a few times to get it to finally show up and start loading. I\'ve been watching Toxic Avenger, which I\'ve never seen before.

Be warned, there may be soft porn in some of these movies -- Toxic Avenger included. (That\'s probably old news to horror fans.)

I went back to FearNet, and the free movies are mostly different now. They had all four Toxic Avenger movies yesterday and earlier today, and now they don\'t have any of them. They\'ve been replaced with other free movies. If you see something you want to watch, watch it before it goes away! ;)

Yep.  It\'s part III.  Part II was Zeitgeist The Addendum.

Part III is really cool.  Instead of corruption 101 like part I where is spells out all the stuff that is wrong... and that\'s about it, this one goes to the root of why there is so much wrong and how it can be addressed.  Then the end part is basically a proposal - shows a pretty detailed demonstration of how it is possible to live consciously.

I found a nice score at the used dvd store today - the 7 disc Harold Lloyd comedy collection box set. 28 different films plus tons of bonus features. Since the release of left Hanging I\'ve been watching LLoyd clips on youtube but now I got the real goods. I\'m pretty stoked!

the cable company gave us free HBO for a short spin. seen a few good ones lately:

the Blind Side - this could be categorized a chick-flick in my book but it was actually a really good movie. Sandra Bullock was really good I thought.

Brazil - it\'s been at least 10 years since I saw this last and it is still excellent! I love how visually artistic this movie is, combined with the humor and thought provoking themes it will always be in my top 20 of cult classics. Even though it is 25 years old I find it very relevant today with the whole bureaucracy fighting the "terrorists" plot. Such a great movie!

Coraline - I really like this movie, I\'ve always enjoyed claymation, not sure if this is or not but the animation is really good. I like most of Tim Burtons stuff.

Book of Eli - I love post apocalyptic movies, it is probably my favorite genre. Denzel is good in this movie but it seemed a bit tame for my likings.

Monsters vs Aliens - watched this with the kids, it was entertaining. Dreamworks stuff is usually pretty good

Date Night - Hilarious, totally funny - "And will you, for the love of God, put on a fucking shirt?

the Hangover - this was also hilarious, even Mike Tyson was funny

My Life in Ruins - came across this by chance because I saw Richard Dreyfuss and it was pretty funny, I guess you would call this a romantic comedy

Land of the Lost - what a waste of time - I am a HUGE Sid and Marty Kroftt fan and I thought this film did them no justice to the awesome stuff they created.

I\'ve seen a few more I either can\'t remember the title or are not worth mentioning. As soon a s I get 3 hrs to kill I\'m gonna finally see Avatar, hope it\'s half as good as the hype.

Got some nice DVDs at a yard sale today for less than 50 cents each (I bought 11 for $5) all horror or cult films:

clockwork orange
v for vendetta
alien apocalypse (with "b dog c" aka bruce campbell)
children of men
friday the 13th killer cut
dead and deader
halloween 2 (rob zombie)
pumpkinhead 4
slither
one million years b.c. (with raquel welch)
the rocky horror picture show  (i already own the box set but being it\'s in my top 5 of favorite movies I couldn\'t pass it up)

of the movies I bought I\'ve only seen clockwork orange, alien apocalypse, rhpc and some of one million bc so overall it was a great score for me (plus all the dvds are in like new condition). I know halloween 2 is gonna be good, rob\'s halloween 1 was awesome but of the remainder what should I watch next? dead and deader looks good because I like cheesy zombie flicks.

Yeah I know it\'s a couple years old. I\'ve watched this 3 times in the past week, just a funny feel good movie. It\'s packed with alot of my favorite actresses: Juliette Lewis, Drew Barrymore, Zoe Bell, Kristen Wiig, Ellen Page and it even had Jimmy Fallon as a bonus! Not sure if it\'s worth buying but if you have Netflix or HBO it is worth the watch.

^Pan\'s Labyrinth is a great flick  ;)

ok, so as usual I\'m a day late and dollar short but I just saw Where the Wild Things Are. I had read that many viewers thought it was too depressing but I didn\'t find that to be the case at all. I thought it was awesome! Absolutely spectacular in so many ways. I immediately bought the soundtrack, it\'s awesome too. I\'m curious what others who have seen this movie think.
