Title: favourite quotes
Post by: d6 on February 02, 2006, 11:43:38 am
while talking on the "fav. movie" topic this came to my mind. just post your favourite quotes! - (inspired by our very own mr. dirtface.)   there is a "buckethead - quotes"  topic on buckethead.tk and all - but I  couldn´t resist.

" certainly, in the topsy-turvy world of heavy rock, having a good solid piece of wood in your hand is often useful. "

Ian Faith, manager of  Spinal Tap

" live ?  what do you mean with live?? I am a movie-star, not an actor!"

yup, enjoyed that one too.

i have many quotes i love for all sorts of reasons, political, romantic, humor, etc... but one that for some reason sticks in my mind as one of the most amusing and makes me giggle each time is from Peter Straub\'s "Floating Dragon":

"...but i really am the proud possessor of a particularly beautiful wanger, surely that will stand in my favor?"

What I always answer when someone tells me I\'m ugly:

"Well my friends think I\'m ugly, I\'ve got a masculine face". Tom Waits.

another sentence by Tom Waits I like a lot is:

"Misery\'s the river of the world, everybody row!"

"God\'s away on business". Is one I like too.

Sorry if it doesn\'t come from a movie.

gkg, and when the dance is over ;
byrons venice carnival days...

-
so we\'ll go no more a roving
so late into the night,
though the heart be still as loving,
and the moon be still as bright.

for the sword outwears its sheath,
and the soul wears out the breast,
and the heart must pause to breathe,
and love itself have rest.

though the night was made for loving,
and the day returns too soon,
yet we\'ll go no more a-roving
by the light of the moon.

With demoniac energy Zappa launched us into my piece. To my surprise I sensed a growing consanguinity with my youthful audience as I played. My fortissimo ending brought out screams and whistles the like of which I had never imagined possible. Dancing Zappa, wild audi- ence, and befuddled me -- I felt like an intruder in a mad scene from ALICE IN WONDERLAND. I had entered my Age of Absurdity.

"Ford stared at Arthur, and Arthur was astonished to find that his will was beginning to weaken. He didn\'t realize that this was because of an old drinking game that Ford learned to play in the hyperspace ports that served the madranite mining belts in the star system of Orion Beta.

The game was not unlike the Earth game called Indian Wrestling, and was played like this:

Two contestants would sit either side of a table, with a glass in front of each of them.

Between them would be placed a bottle of Janx Spirit (as immortalized in that ancient Orion mining song "Oh don\'t give me none more of that Old Janx Spirit/ No, don\'t you give me none more of that Old Janx Spirit/ For my head will fly, my tongue will lie, my eyes will fry and I may die/ Won\'t you pour me one more of that sinful Old Janx Spirit").

Each of the two contestants would then concentrate their will on the bottle and attempt to tip it and pour spirit into the glass of his opponent-who would then have to drink it.

The bottle would then be refilled. The game would be played again. And again.

Once you started to lose you would probably keep losing, because one of the effects of Janx spirit is to depress telepsychic power.

As soon as a predetermined quantity had been consumed, the final loser would have to perform a forfeit, which was usually obscenely biological.

Ford Prefect usually played to lose."

from The Hitchhiker\'s Guide to the Galaxy, by the late great Douglas Adams

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, and fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small doesn\'t serve the world. There\'s nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won\'t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We are born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It\'s not just in some of us, it\'s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.

"Fuck \'em if they can\'t take a joke."
- Church of the Subgenius (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Church_of_the_SubGenius)

Quite self-explanatory really.

"Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the law."
-Aleister Crowley

I don\'t believe in any of the religious stuff behind it, but I just like the idea that in a perfect world, everyone could do whatever they wanted, and we wouldn\'t need policing because we would know not to do something bad, which has nothing to do with what the quote is actually about, but whatever.

"Simple things may amuse simple minds, but it takes a simple mind to think of anything as simple"
- Me

I came up with this about 5 years ago, and I don\'t really  remember what it\'s supposed to mean, but it has a nice ring to it, don\'t ya think?

*edit*

Actually, that "perfect world" sounds pretty horrible. Since moral notions of "good" and "bad" are completely subjective, that would mean everyone would have to agree with that 1 subjective definition of "good" and "bad"... I still don\'t like the whole idea of being "policed", though, which leads me to my next quote:

"Who will watch the watchers?"
- I don\'t know, I must have got it from somewhere...

"i don\'t think it\'s about understanding really. anyone who thinks they really understand someone else\'s music, probably just understands how they themselves feel about it. we all do that, and it\'s the feelings accumulated that make it what it is and, feeds the artist too.... that\'s my frame of mind right now at least. now, every now and then you\'ll go "i get it! ha! that\'s what that meant!" or, maybe you\'ll be watching a movie and you\'ll hear some background music and realize you\'ve heard that before too  -
but, don\'t put pressure of understanding a cd or a work of music on your shoulders.. i guess that\'s what i\'m trying to say. it does it, or it doesn\'t. if it does, you play it again and again, if it doesn\'t, you don\'t. if it\'s a not sure if it does it, you save it for a rainy day." -Oke Hitsu

"The whitest white dipped in clinging dirt. Another summer has thrown its corpse on my floor. The streets have given birth to even more strangers. Rivers of urine stripe the sidewalks. It rained the other day and the only thing that occurred to me was it would wash the smell away for a few days. Tonight is the first hot night. Outside my window, the human noise factor is intense. It's past midnight. They talk too much. They scream liquor-fueled idiot chatter. I pull away and close the door. I think about how it's all going to play out. How much time people spend trying to get across to each other, trying to clear their names. Trying to overturn the charges brought against them. I have decided to tell them that it's all true and not seek a fair trial. It's the only way to be free. Stop trying to matter. I could get my body tattooed with air-colored ink and walk invisibly amongst them. I have heard people say that they felt closer to their parents after they have died. Maybe if I treat people as if they were dead, I could get along with them better. I want to be able to like living people somehow. As it is now, they're best coming through speakers or trapped between book covers. Here I go into the heat. Four months as a human anvil."

It has thrills and chills, and its very brightly coloured , and its very loud and its fun, for a while. Some people have been on the ride for a long time, and they begin to question - is this real, or is this just a ride? And other people have remembered, and they come back to us. They say, \'Hey! Dont worry, dont be afraid, ever, because, this is just a ride.\'

And we kill those people.

"Shut him up! I\'ve got a lot invested in this ride! Shut him up!" Look at my furrows of worry! Look at my big bank account and my family! This has to be real."

It\'s just a ride. But we always kill those few guys that try to tell us that, you ever notice that? and let the demons run amuck. but it doesn\'t matter cuz it\'s just a ride and we can change it any time we want. So live, that when thy summons comes to join
The innumerable caravan, which moves
To that mysterious realm, where each shall take
His chamber in the silent halls of death,
Thou go not, like the quarry-slave at night,
Scourged to his dungeon, but, sustained and soothed
By an unfaltering trust, approach thy grave
Like one who wraps the drapery of his couch
About him, and lies down to pleasant dreams.

Bruce Campbell (Ash from the Evil Dead movies) has a ton of great quotes. Not very thought provoking but fun none the less. Here are a few......

"There\'s something out there. That... that witch in the cellar is only part of it. It lives... out in those woods, in the dark... something... something that\'s come back from the dead."

"When you\'ve just emptied two barrels of a shotgun into the head of your favorite bartender it\'s a pretty good bet that happy hour\'s over."

and of course the classic "GIVE ME SOME SUGAR BABY..."

I like to feel the artists\' soul-- as well as their mind-- pushing the medium they are working in. With the artists I have been lucky enough to work with, or my own music, I like to challenge myself and the listener, but I don\'t want to frustrate them. I don\'t care for artists who like to challenge their audience just for the sake of getting a reaction. The best ones always give something of themselves that is real and heartfelt, then push the boundaries of their medium.

"Attend a university if you possibly can. There is no content of knowledge that is not pertinent to the work you will want to do. But before you attend a university work at something for a while. Do anything. Get a job in a potato field; or work as a grease-monkey in an auto repair shop. But if you do work in a field do not fail to observe the look and the feel of earth and of all things that you handle -- yes, even potatoes! Or, in the auto shop, the smell of oil and grease and burning rubber. Paint of course, but if you have to lay aside painting for a time, continue to draw. Listen well to all conversations and be instructed by them and take all seriousness seriously. Never look down upon anything or anyone as not worthy of notice. In college or out of college, read. And form opinions! ...Read all kinds of poetry and know many poets and many artists. Go to an art school, or two, or three, or take art courses at night if necessary. And paint and paint and draw and draw. ...Look at pictures and more pictures. Look at every kind of visual symbol, every kind of emblem; do not spurn signboards of furniture drawings of this style of art or that style of art. Do not be afraid to like paintings honestly or to dislike them honestly, but if you do dislike them retain an open mind. Do not dismiss any school of art... Talk and talk and sit at cafés, and listen to everything, to Brahms, to Brubeck, to the Italian hour on the radio. Listen to preachers in small town churches and in big city churches. Listen to politicians in New England town meetings and to rabble-rousers in Alabama. Even draw them. And remember that you are trying to learn to think what you want to think, that you are trying to co-ordinate mind and hand and eye. Go to all sorts of museums and galleries and to the studios of artists. Go to Paris and Madrid and Rome and Ravenna and Padua. Stand alone in Sainte Chapelle, in the Sistine Chapel, in the Church of the Carmine in Florence. Draw and draw and paint and learn to work in many media; try lithography and aquatint and silk-screen. Know all that you can about art, and by all means have opinions. Never be afraid to become embroiled in art of life or politics; never be afraid to learn to draw or paint better than you already do; and never be afraid to undertake any kind of art at all, however exalted or however common, but do it with distinction."

Have patience with everything that remains unsolved in your heart. Try to love the questions themselves, like locked rooms and like books written in a foreign language. Do not now look for the answers. They cannot now be given to you because you could not live them. It is a question of experiencing everything. At present you need to live the question. Perhaps you will gradually, without even noticing it, find yourself experiencing the answer, some distant day.

When everyone knows beauty is beauty, this is bad.
When everyone knows good is good, this is not good.

So being and nonbeing produce each other,
Difficulty and ease complement each other,
Long and short shape each other,
High and low contrast with each other,
Voices and echoes comform to each other,
Before and after go along with each other.

So sages manage effortless service and carry out unspoken guidance.

All beings work, without exception if they:
Live without possessiveness,
Act without presumption,
and do not dwell on success.
Then by this very nondwelling success will not leave.

the above quote made me think of something from a GREAT movie called NETWORK (1976) - this is a must see

"I don\'t have to tell you things are bad. Everybody knows things are bad. It\'s a depression. Everybody\'s out of work or scared of losing their job. The dollar buys a nickel\'s work, banks are going bust, shopkeepers keep a gun under the counter. Punks are running wild in the street and there\'s nobody anywhere who seems to know what to do, and there\'s no end to it. We know the air is unfit to breathe and our food is unfit to eat, and we sit watching our TV\'s while some local newscaster tells us that today we had fifteen homicides and sixty-three violent crimes, as if that\'s the way it\'s supposed to be. We know things are bad - worse than bad. They\'re crazy. It\'s like everything everywhere is going crazy, so we don\'t go out anymore. We sit in the house, and slowly the world we are living in is getting smaller, and all we say is, \'Please, at least leave us alone in our living rooms. Let me have my toaster and my TV and my steel-belted radials and I won\'t say anything. Just leave us alone.\' Well, I\'m not gonna leave you alone. I want you to get mad! I don\'t want you to protest. I don\'t want you to riot - I don\'t want you to write to your congressman because I wouldn\'t know what to tell you to write. I don\'t know what to do about the depression and the inflation and the Russians and the crime in the street. All I know is that first you\'ve got to get mad.

You\'ve got to say, \'I\'m a HUMAN BEING, Goddamnit! My life has VALUE!\' So I want you to get up now. I want all of you to get up out of your chairs. I want you to get up right now and go to the window. Open it, and stick your head out, and yell,

\'I\'M AS MAD AS HELL, AND I\'M NOT GOING TO TAKE THIS ANYMORE!\' I want you to get up right now, sit up, go to your windows, open them and stick your head out and yell - \'I\'m as mad as hell and I\'m not going to take this anymore!\' Things have got to change. But first, you\'ve gotta get mad!... You\'ve got to say, \'I\'m as mad as hell, and I\'m not going to take this anymore!\' Then we\'ll figure out what to do about the depression and the inflation and the oil crisis. But first get up out of your chairs, open the window, stick your head out, and yell, and say it:

You know, the above quote got me thinking about what it means.  First, I do like the rhyme happening in it.

I\'m not familiar with the book, but the place I know that trancends words and explanations requires a great deal of stillness to stay in and a lot of patience to accurately listen to.

Either that, or I\'m there and gone before I know it and only realize that I was there later.

I suppose I feel like waxing poetic today.

I love bumper stickers, in fact I am a sticker freak but that is a different story for another time. I saw this bumper sticker today and it hit home with me:

I wish I could relate
to the people I\'m related to

... and while watching Fast Food Nation the other night I was reminded of another bumper sticker I saw:

                      VEGETARIAN -
Old Hawaiian Word for Bad Fisherman

... and one I saw for the trekkies:

Very Funny, Scotty.
Now Beam Up My Clothes

There are so many good bumper stickers I\'ve seen that I could never quote them, or even remember them all. What are some of your favorites?

"Ultimately, man should not ask what the meaning of his life is, but rather he must recognize that it is he who is asked. In a word, each man is questioned by life; and he can only answer to life by answering for his own life; to life he can only respond by being responsible."
--Viktor Frankl

^ always enjoyed that one!

here are some of my favorite Tom Robbins quotes...

"There is no such thing as a weird human being, It\'s just that some people require more understanding than others."

"There are only two mantras, yum and yuck, mine is yum."

"Disbelief in magic can force a poor soul into believing in government and business."

"It\'s never too late to have a happy childhood."

"In the haunted house of life, art is the only stair that doesn't squeak."

"You\'ve heard of people calling in sick. You may have called in sick a few times yourself. But have you ever thought about calling in well? It\'d go like this: You\'d get the boss on the line and say, Listen, I\'ve been sick ever since I started working here, but today I\'m well and I won\'t be in anymore."

"The answer is never the answer. What\'s really interesting is the mystery.
If you seek the mystery instead of the answer, you\'ll always be seeking.
I\'ve never seen anybody really find the answer-- they think they have, so they stop thinking.
But the job is to seek mystery, evoke mystery,
plant a garden in which strange plants grow and mysteries bloom.
The need for mystery is greater than the need for an answer."

"The Optimist Creed"

"Promise Yourself

To be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind.

To talk health, happiness, and prosperity to every person you meet.

To make all your friends feel that there is something worthwhile in them.

To look at the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true.

To think only of the best, to work only for the best and to expect only the best.

To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own.

To forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future.

To wear a cheerful expression at all times and give a smile to every living creature you meet.

To give so much time to improving yourself that you have no time to criticize others.

To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear, and too happy to permit the presence of trouble.

To think well of yourself and to proclaim this fact to the world, not in loud word, but in great deeds.

To live in the faith that the whole world is on your side, so long as you are true to the best that is in you."

I just read Kurt Vonneguts a man with no country - what a great book, imo opinion one of Vonneguts best and I\'ve read most of his works - he was and still is awesome!! but the reason I like this book so much is that I am so familiar with Vonneguts writing, if you\'ve never read his stuff then I recommend Breakfast of Champions, Sirens of Titan or Cat\'s Cradle. Read the early works first.

ok rather than quote the entire book I will just quote one of favorite passages (and there were MANY to choose from)...

If you really want to hurt your parents and you don\'t have enough nerve to be gay, the least you can do is go in to the arts. I\'m not kidding. The arts are not a way to make a living. They are a very human way of making life more bearable. Practicing an art, no matter how well or how badly, is a way to make your soul grow, for heaven\'s sake. Sing in the shower. Dance to the radio. Write a poem to a friend, even a lousy poem. Do it as well as you possibly can. You will get an enormous reward. You will have created something.

Travis (i doubt you visit this thread) but I\'d guess you are a fan of Vonnegut as well, am I right?
